Authors from Indian organisations contributed 39,709 papers, which was 8.4% of the global share of 472,819 research papers during the period. India's contribution grew 26% in the five-year period, in line with the country's emerging focus on the critical industry.

India ranked third in terms of number of research papers published on chip design and fabrication between 2018 and 2023, above Japan, South Korea, and Germany, according to the Emerging Technology Observatory maintained by Georgetown University, US.
The findings, however, show China is the leader in the field, having overtaken the US, producing 160,852 papers in the period, capturing 34% of the global share.
Industry experts said India has been progressing in multiple sectors of the chip design value chain, and so far, there are more than half-a-million professionals aligned to chip design, with almost every product company and design house including Qualcomm, AMD and Intel having a base in India.

According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, Indian engineers account for about 19% of the global talent.
"The research coming out of India is focused on the back-end portion of the chip or the product design value chain. Given the kind of environment the current government has created, there has been a double-digit increase in the R&D segment. There has been a Rs 2,000 crore infusion from the government to support state-of-the-art R&D in the country," said Danish Faruqui, CEO at Fab Economics, a US-based greenfield fab and OSAT project consultancy.
